Kelor Island: the short first hike
Updated 27 October 2026
A Kelor Island warm-up hike on day one of a 3 day boat trip is a short, steep hill that takes 15 to 30 minutes up to a viewpoint over the bay. Kelor sits 50 to 70 minutes by boat from Labuan Bajo, so it is the first stop of the route.
How long the Kelor hike takes
Allow 15 to 30 minutes up a short, steep hill. A small hilly islet is all Kelor is, and the climb leads to a viewpoint over the bay. The path is dry and the effort is moderate.
That is shorter than Padar and a lot shorter than a Komodo trek. A group of 14 spreads out over the climb, with the fastest at the top in 15 minutes and the slowest in 30. Everyone is back on the boat within an hour.
Kelor is not a dragon site. It is a short hill with a view, and it asks for sturdy shoes more than for fitness.
The view repays a tired group, and nobody has to climb. A friend who stays on the boat misses 30 minutes and nothing else.
Why Kelor works as the first stop
Kelor is close to Labuan Bajo. The sail from the harbor is 50 to 70 minutes, which makes it the first stop of the route. The boat is moving by the time the group has unpacked, and the group is walking by the time the introductions are done.
A short hike also does a useful job. It wakes the group up, sorts out who has the right shoes and shows the captain the group's pace. By the end of it, the next three days are easier to plan.
Kelor works as the first or the last stop because of its distance from the harbor. On the 3D2N and 2D1N routes it opens the trip. On the 4D3N route it closes it, on day four, before the return to the harbor.

Shoes, water and heat for a group
Wear shoes with grip. The path is steep and dry, and sandals slip on it. Trainers are enough, and boots are more than you need.
Carry water, a hat and sunscreen. The climb is short, but the sun on a hill without cover is strong. One bottle per person is enough for the 15 to 30 minutes.
Bring your passport or ID for boarding. Keep the phone in a pocket and your hands free for the steep part.
A group checklist for the boat deck on the first morning: shoes on, water filled, hats ready and a head count taken. It takes two minutes and sets the tone.
Kelor against Padar
Kelor and Padar are both short hikes to a view, and neither has dragons. They differ in length and in what you see.
Kelor takes 15 to 30 minutes, while Padar takes 25 to 45. Padar looks over three bays with sand of different colors, and Kelor looks over one bay close to Labuan Bajo. Both are moderate, and both ask for shoes with grip.
Padar is a sunrise stop, with an early start. Kelor is a morning stop on day one, with a late start. If a group member can manage only one climb, the choice is theirs.
Kelor is the warm-up and Padar is the main event. A group that skips Kelor loses nothing it cannot find at Padar, and a group that skips Padar loses the view that gives the route its name.
Cost and tickets
Park entry applies to Kelor like every stop on the route. Domestic guests pay IDR 50,000 on weekdays and IDR 75,000 on weekends, while international guests pay IDR 250,000.
Tickets are per person and sit outside the boat fare. Ranger and pier charges are settled on the day.
Hiking itself costs nothing more. A guide is not included on a private charter; it is available on request for the whole trip and quoted separately.
Keep the first morning simple. Do the hike in the first hours, when the group has energy, and save the budget for the tickets of the days that follow.

FAQ
How long is the Kelor hike?
The hike takes 15 to 30 minutes up a short, steep hill to a viewpoint over the bay. A group of 14 spreads out along the path, and everyone is back on the boat within an hour. Sturdy shoes help on the dry, steep path.
Is Kelor easy for kids?
The effort is moderate, and the hill is short and steep. A child who walks well manages it with an adult beside them. A toddler who must be carried is a harder case. Children aged 0 to 2 travel free, and from age 3 the full fare applies.
Can we swim at Kelor?
Kelor is a hike stop and not a swim stop. The swim of day one is Manjarite Beach, which follows after lunch on board. Bring a swimsuit on the first day anyway, since Manjarite is a snorkel stop.
Is Kelor on 2D1N?
Yes. The 2D1N route opens with Kelor on day one, then Manjarite Beach and Kalong. Day two runs Padar, Pink Beach and Komodo Island. On the 4D3N route Kelor closes the trip instead.
What do we wear?
Shoes with grip, light clothes, a hat and sunscreen, and a bottle of water. Trainers are enough. Keep sandals for the boat, and bring a swimsuit for Manjarite Beach later the same day.
