A big-family trip on a private phinisi
Updated 27 October 2026
An extended family trip on a Komodo private boat suits Arham Jaya 2 or Nusantara Karya, where every cabin has its own bathroom. Children aged 0 to 2 travel free, and from age 3 the full fare applies. Fourteen relatives pay IDR 3,180,000 (≈ USD 195) each on Arham Jaya 2.
Three generations on one boat
A phinisi is a boat with decks, steps and a sun that gets strong by midday, and a family of three generations should plan for all three. The cabins are air-conditioned on all three boats, which helps in the afternoon heat.
Stairs are part of life aboard. Segara Liveaboard has its cabins on two levels, with the Master Cabin Balcony and the Deluxe Cabin Room on the upper deck and the others on the main deck. On Arham Jaya 2 and Nusantara Karya, ask for a cabin near the deck when you book.
Family meetings happen on the sundeck. Arham Jaya 2 has loungers and bean bags, Nusantara Karya has lazy chairs and a daybed, and Segara has bean bags under a shade net. There is shade and a place to sit on each.
We make no medical claims about any boat. A grandparent with a health condition should speak to a doctor, and then to us about the cabin and the route.
Cabins for parents, kids and grandparents
Give grandparents a double with a private bathroom. On Arham Jaya 2 that means a Master Cabin Balcony or a Private Cabin Sea View, and every cabin on the boat has its own bathroom. Nusantara Karya offers the same with its Master, Deluxe and Private cabins.
Put parents and children in the share cabins. On Nusantara Karya, one Share Cabin has 1 double bed and 2 single bunk beds, which suits two parents and two children exactly. On Arham Jaya 2 one Share Cabin has 2 double bunk beds for 4, and the other has 4 single bunk beds for 4.
Keep the grandparents off the upper bunks. A lower bed or a double is easier to reach in the dark.
Fourteen relatives fill all 5 cabins on Nusantara Karya or up to 6 on Arham Jaya 2. On Segara, 5 of 6 rooms have their own bathroom, but the Standard Cabin Room shares one, so a family that needs a private bathroom for every cabin should pick one of the other two.
Children: ages and prices
Children aged 0 to 2 travel free, accompanied by a parent or guardian. From age 3 the full fare applies. On a private charter that rule matters only for the head count and the band, since the boat is one price.
Here is the sum for a family of 14 on 3D2N. Arham Jaya 2 costs IDR 44,500,000 (≈ USD 2,730), which is IDR 3,180,000 (≈ USD 195) per person. Nusantara Karya costs IDR 48,000,000 (≈ USD 2,945), which is IDR 3,430,000 (≈ USD 210) per person.
Children aged 3 and above take a place in the 14. The park ticket for children follows the park's rules.
One way to lower the share: tell us every age when you ask for the quote. A family with two infants prices differently from a family with two eight-year-olds.
A route with short walks
Every walk is optional, Padar included. Kelor takes 15 to 30 minutes up a short hill. Padar takes 25 to 45 minutes on a loose, steep path. Komodo Island offers short, medium and long trails with a park ranger, and most day itineraries take the shorter ones.
For a family with grandparents, the 4D3N route is the kindest. It puts Komodo Island on day two, Padar on day three and Kelor on day four, so each day holds one walk and nobody climbs twice in a morning. Arham Jaya 2 at 14 guests costs IDR 3,540,000 (≈ USD 217) each for it, and Nusantara Karya costs IDR 3,640,000 (≈ USD 223).
The 3D2N route packs Padar, Komodo Island and three snorkel stops into day two, which is long for the oldest and youngest. Choose it only if the family is fit.
Kalong at dusk and Pink Beach are the easy stops. The bats are watched from the deck, and Pink Beach has a mild current and shallow reef.
Life jackets, crew and weather for a big family
All three boats carry a life jacket for every guest. If a small child needs a vest fitted to their size, bring one from home.
Crew run the boat, and the captain decides the order of stops and the anchorage on the day. Weather changes the plan, and a family with small children should hear that before it books.
Guide and photo or video work sit outside a private charter, available on request at a separate quote. Park tickets are extra too, at IDR 50,000 for an Indonesian guest on a weekday and IDR 250,000 for a foreign guest.
